Developing for complex medical conditions

Living with an ostomy has a great impact on a person’s everyday life. The condition challenges a person’s social life, body image and sense of self-esteem.

An abdominal surgery where the large abdominal muscle is cut may also increase the risk of getting a hernia resulting in much inconvenience — improper fit of ostomy appliances, risk of leakage, negative body image and appearance, discomfort, pain and sense of gravity are just some of the many multifaceted issues which needs to be considered when designing, developing and manufacturing garments and textiles to address this common yet special condition.

Developing ostomy and hernia garments and textiles requires expertise

Ostomy and hernia products are as stated complex products for complex conditions. Knowledge of human anatomy as well as a myriad of body types needs to be employed when designing garments and textiles. How does an opening from an area inside the body to the outside react to having a textile applied to it perpetually? How does the human body generally behave? Considerations regarding the movement caused by the respiratory as well as the digestive system are imperative in relation to ostomy and hernia garments. Therefore, it is crucial to develop in close cooperation with doctors, nurses and ostomates to ensure compliance, optimal performance, comfort and maximum quality at all times.

Moreover, knowledge about textiles and their performance is also crucial when designing garments for ostomates underwear, tubes and belt must not only fit the user to make a difference and be used. They need to be able to stretch, they need to be made in materials that will have moisture absorption or conductive properties in order to be comfortable for the user as well as provide optimal conditions for healing.

Lastly, when the optimal design is decided another condition needs to be factored in is that of manufacturing. How is it possible to design garments according to design requirements as well as the legislative environment in the respective market where the garment is to be marketed?

Different needs - different levels of support

As the need for support and compression varies from person to person, a complete ostomy and hernia range needs to address this fact. Like no other developer and manufacturer Tytex delivers high performance ostomy garments and a complete portfolio of products with three levels of support. Our partners can choose from ostomy and hernia garments within three support levels; light, medium and maximum. The possibility of creating these support levels have been made possible be the strong technological platform applied and developed at Tytex.

4-way stretch

The garments made by Tytex for our partners all have 4-way stretch capabilities. 4-way stretch ensures, that the textile solution will adapt to the part of the body it is applied to. This capability also provides maximum comfort and stretch needed for both recovery as well as the comfort at all times during prolonged wear.

Targeted compression and support

With an ostomy and hernia garment developed and customised by Tytex and partners compression and support properties will be possible to integrate into the end products. By incorporating compression zones in garments and textiles it is possible to provide optimal conditions for healing by influencing blood flow and potentially reduce general pain or sores on the area to which the garment is applied. Moreover, specifically for ostomy and hernia garments many end users wish to have support or compression as this significantly can help in relation to hernia management as well as enhance feeling of well-being and overall self image.

Seamless knitting

A ostomy and hernia garment will be place on top of a part of the human body. It is crucial that the solution does not provide stress and pressure at the site of surgery as this will both inhibit optimal healing but also cause unwanted continuous frustration to both the user and the ostomy or hernia. With any kind of garment and textile solution from Tytex our partners have can develop ostomy and hernia products which will have no seams in any way frustrating the end user and the surgical site the products are intended for. Maximal comfort and optimal healing conditions are thereby ensured.

Fact-based sizing

When it comes to medical textiles and post-op garments, no size fits all. Some ostomates can be more challenging to fit correctly. Moreover, body shapes and sizes vary significantly and surgical site sensitivity

change as they continue to heal. Potential adjustments need to be performed continuously and a variety of sizes needs to be available to the end users. That is why all products developed and customised by Tytex and partners contain sizes which are based on three parameters; statistical body knowledge, comfort stretch measurements aa well as extensive knowledge and experience with a variety of knitting methods applied to different materials. The combination of these three parameters defines our sizes and they ensure the ostomates will experience perfect fit at all times as well as a minimal need for adjustment. Moreover, these factors allows for minimal amount of SKU's at a manufacturer level.

Additional patient-specific factors to consider

A stoma will be placed somewhere on the patients abdomen. The stoma site is selected by the health care professionals. Considerations regarding stoma site selection include: length, size and shape of abdomen, exposed abdomen in various positions, occupation of patient, clothing worn by patient, use of devices, physical issues, mobility, eye sight, dexterity, self care ability as well as surgeon and patient preferences to name just a few. All these factors also impact the choice of garment applied to the surgical area. With the wide range of possibilities for garment development and customisation at Tytex all ostomy and hernia garment partners can develop garments and textiles for close to any circumstance and any use situation. We can help our partners create garments in various lengths and widths. We can develop belts, tubes and underwear. We can carefully regulate compression, support and fixation levels and we can use a wide range of accessories and special treatments to regulate a multitude of properties such as moisture absorption, breathability, thermal conduction, ease of operation, color profiles and anti-bacterial qualities.

As all the above-mentioned considerations are factored in before selecting the stoma site, all these considerations with the addition of several other considerations – e.g. allergies, skin conditions as well as aesthetics and psychological factors – also effect the requirements of the garments being applied to the stoma area.

Case: ostomy - upstream outsourcing increased downstream resources

Situation

An ostomy business customer selling Tytex's branded products as well as producing own garment range was using substantial time on sourcing materials, dealing with suppliers and managing a small scale production himself. The result was strategic drift, lack of focus and dilution of important resources to drive further commercialisation and sales

Action

Based on Tytex's strong product performance and an excellent customer relationship with Tytex, the customer decided to outsource the design and manufacturing of all main products to Tytex in order to reduce complexity and free up scarce resources. A joint transition plan with key deliverables and milestones was agreed on and implemented.

Outcome

A manufacturing switch according to agreed product specifications was completed within nine months. Because of the released resources, additional sales people were hired and the marketing budget was increased. Moreover, the customer was now able to spend more time on promoting sales and marketing as well as spend more time on his customers.
